Stony Brook has a variety of print and broadcast organizations that welcome - and cannot exist without - student participation.

BROADCAST
There's a lot more happening than what you see and hear after you hit the on button. Broadcasting, like every other form of journalism, is a team effort involving many skills, most of them being used behind the scenes.
It is crucial for students interests in broadcasting as a career to get their feet wet as soon as possible and to gain as much understanding and as many skills as possible. Stations hire those who already know what they're doing. Wolf Camera D90 Review
Broadcasting also is an important opportunity for students who have no intention of such a career for the same reasons that apply to any growth experience. To be part of such an organization, working on real projects that are both creative and technical, demonstrates a willingness to take on new ideas. Training in each of the areas is provided. WUSB-FM (90.1 FM):
The university's 24-hour non-commercial radio station, broadcasting information, music and entertainment programming. Stony Brook Union, Room 228. Phone: 632-6500.
Programming: Hosting and producing music, news, public affairs, sports, and radio arts programs. Successful completion of WUSB training program required.
Announcing: Includes hosting programs, as above, or other duties as assigned. Successful completion of WUSB training program required.
Engineering: Technical support for station operations. Successful completion of WUSB training program required. Some duties, such as repair and remotes, also require approval from WUSB Chief Engineer.
Production: Produce on-air promotional spots, station identifications and underwriting spots, among other things. Successful completion of WUSB training program required.
Administration: Management positions include Program Director, Business Manager, News Director, Public Affairs Director, Sports Director, Music Director, Arts Director, Production Director, Operations Director and others. News: Announce and/or produce regularly scheduled newscasts, breaking news and so on. Successful completion of WUSB training program required.
Sports: Announce, produce, engineer and play-by-play at Seawolves games, talk shows and so on. Successful completion of WUSB training program required.
Radio drama: Announce and /or produce radio plays, poetry, literature and so forth. Successful completion of WUSB training program required.
Copywriting: Write public service announcements, station promos, underwriting credits, etc. Permission of Program Director required.
Research: Ascertain listener and non-listener interest, through surveys and phone
calls, in radio, music and so on. Permission of Business Manager required.
Publicity/Promotion: Assist on-air and off the air with publicity and promotional campaigns, including WUSB program guide, fundraising events, appearances, press releases and so forth. Permission of Business Manager required.
Business: Assist with budgets, fundraising, vendor contacts and so forth. Permission of Business Manager required.
Computers: Assist computerized functions, including program logs, satellite program listings, fundraising, Web site and so forth. Permission of Chief Engineer required.
SBU-TV Channel 30
The student television station, which broadcasts a variety of information and entertainment shows on campus cable. Stony Brook Union, Lower Level. Phone: 632-9349.
Camera: Assist with taping of events for future on-air use. 3TV training required.
Lighting: Assist with lighting set-ups for videotaping. 3TV training required.
Audio: Assist with sound set-ups for videotaping. 3TV training required.
Editing: Assist with editing of taped material for future on-air use. 3TV training required.
Production: Assist with equipment and operations details, such as sign-in and maintenance, 3TV training required.
Programming: Assist with scheduling of programming, local and syndicated. 3TV training required.
Administration: Management positions. General Manager, Program Director, News Director, Operations Manager, Marketing Director and so forth. These positions are held by USB undergraduate students who have been elected or appointed to the posts.
Sales: Assist with obtaining commercial and non-commercial advertising spots from campus and off-campus businesses. 3TV training required.

Marketing: Assist with campus promotion and publicity campaign for awareness of 3TV. Permission of Marketing Director required.
Copywriting: Assist with public service announcements, commercials and event script writing for broadcast. Permission of Program Director required.
News/Public Affairs: Host and produce information programs, including newscasts, long-form public affairs and documentaries. 3TV training required.
Computers: Assist with computerized functions, both on the air and off. 3TV training required.
Business: Assist with budgets, revenue-raising projects and events. Permission of Business Manager required.
WUSB 1630 AM
